ROOFING 101
Standard Asphalt Shingles
Laminated fiberglass and asphalt with granules produced in 3 one-foot "tabs that have a gap between each.
Dimensional Asphalt Shingle
Same as above with a second layer stacked on the exposed part of the shingle, usually patterned to imitate cedar shake
Architectural Asphalt Shingle
Same as above with a pattern cut into the exposed part of the shingle, usually a scallop, block, etc.
Cedar Shake
Short lengths of cedar that are split (not sawn) to reveal the natural grain
Slate
Quarried stone cut into individual tabs and shapes.
Ribbed metal
Metal panels, usually 3 feet wide that have vertical ribbed patterns for strength. They are fastened with exposed screws which have small rubber washers on them.
Standing Seam Metal
12 to 16 inch wide interlocking panels that conceal the fasteners under the seam
Low Slope
This includes sheet EPDM (rubber) Bitumin and similar products that are designed to be glued down rather than nailed. Always recommended when the roof is flat or nearly flat. Also used as an underlayment for high convergence areas.

I, as you may have guessed, am Ed Perry. I’ve been roofing full-time since 1991 and did it as a side job for many years before that while working in the retail grocery and motorcycle businesses. My grandfather was a life-long carpenter and inspired me to work with my hands. (Later, my dad didn’t give me a choice.)
My “philosophy” on roofing is as follows: meet or exceed manufacturers specifications, be in person on the job site (hands-on) keep the crew super small (I know where every nail is and who put it there) and provide an exceptional project experience for a fair competitive price. My phone is always on.
Tim Edgecomb is my full-time crew and has worked with me for almost 20 years, with some “prodigal” time. Occasionally we pick up laborers for heavy lifting and clean up from the ranks of college kids (who suddenly get very serious about their education upon returning to school.)
